We’re pleased to introduce Octez.js, a JavaScript/TypeScript SDK for building applications on Tezos, with a growing set of capabilities designed to support the upcoming Tezos X architecture.
Built as a fork of Taquito, the widely adopted Tezos SDK developed by ECAD Labs, Octez.js builds upon an established foundation while introducing new capabilities tailored to the evolution of the Tezos ecosystem.
In particular, Octez.js is evolving to support Tezos X and its dual-runtime architecture, where Michelson and EVM smart contracts will be able to interact seamlessly.
Building on Taquito’s foundations
Octez.js builds upon the open-source work of ECAD Labs and the Taquito contributors, whose efforts have played a crucial role in making Tezos development accessible to JavaScript and TypeScript developers.
By building on this foundation, Octez.js preserves a familiar development approach while progressively introducing capabilities specific to Tezos X. It is also developed as open-source software so that its features can also contribute to Taquito’s development, should its maintainers wish to integrate them.
The goal is to help developers prepare for the next stage of Tezos, as its architecture and tooling continue to evolve.
What’s new for Tezos X?
Tezos X brings together two execution environments: the Michelson runtime, native to Tezos, and an Ethereum-compatible EVM runtime.
Octez.js introduces several capabilities to help developers work across these environments:
-
Cross-runtime address mapping: Derive the corresponding Ethereum-compatible address from a Tezos address, and vice versa, without requiring a network request.
-
Cross-runtime operation tracking: Retrieve the corresponding operation identifier across the Michelson and EVM runtimes, making it easier to follow interactions between them.
-
Cross-runtime transactions and contract calls: Prepare operations to transfer funds or interact with smart contracts from the Michelson runtime to the EVM runtime, and vice versa. Octez.js handles operation preparation, leaving signing and submission to the developer’s usual tools.
-
Improved confirmation tracking: More reliable operation confirmation handling on networks with very short block times, addressing cases where confirmations could previously be missed.
Together, these capabilities lay the groundwork for a smoother developer experience as Tezos X takes shape.
Get started
Octez.js packages are already available on npm. .
To install the main SDK:
npm install @tezos-x/Octez.js
Aspects of octez.js v25 that require user action
-
beacon-types UMD global renamed: if you load
dist/beacon-types.umd.jsfrom a<script>tag, the global is nowoctezBeaconTypesinstead oftaquitoBeaconTypes. -
octez.connect v5:
@tezos-x/octez.js-dapp-walletnow depends on octez.connect 5.0.4 (multi-network). It is backward compatible, and no code changes are needed on the octez.js side. -
Deprecation: the
TAQUITO\_\*environment variables are deprecated. Switch to theOCTEZJS\_\* names.
Resources
We encourage developers to explore Octez.js, experiment with its new capabilities, and share their feedback as support for Tezos X continues to develop.
This is an early step towards making the Tezos X developer experience as seamless as possible across both Michelson and EVM environments.
