Tezos bakers: we need your support for Etherlink 6.1

Shortly after the activation of Etherlink 6.0, we identified a technical issue with the deposit of FA tokens on the Tezos Bridge, which has resulted in FA token deposit transactions failing to transfer ownership to the expected recipient on Etherlink.

All user funds remain safe! This issue only affects transaction acceptance, not custody of assets.

Since then, Etherlink core devs from Nomadic Labs, TriliTech, and Functori, have identified the root cause of the issue and prepared a bugfix kernel upgrade proposal that:

  • Fixes the regression in the business logic of FA token deposits, restoring the Tezos Bridge to full functionality.
  • Unblocks the locked tokens deposits from the only user affected at the time of publishing this article.

:magnifying_glass_tilted_left: Please refer to the Medium announcement for further details on the issue and how it has been addressed by the Etherlink 6.1 kernel upgrade proposal:

Given the Tezos Bridge is a prominent component of the Etherlink infrastructure and that user funds are currently locked, we are convinced that the fix should be deployed on Etherlink Mainnet ASAP. This is why we are proposing to the community to make use of the Fast governance process to deploy this upgrade.

:date: Important dates

We plan to release Etherlink 6.1 to the governance process this Friday, Dec 19th, targeting the following periods:

  • Proposal: fast governance period 689, spanning between L1 levels #11247889 and #11,251,488 (Fri 19 December 2025, 03:24 UTC – 11:24 UTC).

  • Promotion: fast governance period 690, spanning between L1 levels #11,251,489 and #11,255,088 (Fri 19 December 2025, 11:24 UTC – 19:24 UTC)The ETA of these blocks might be affected by network delays and may drift slightly.

For up-to-date information, see the Etherlink mainnet governance portal.

Based on this timeline, should the governance process be successful, we expect Etherlink 6.1 to go live on Etherlink Mainnet some time between December 20 8:00PM UTC and December 21 7:00AM UTC.

After ensuring the fix is correct, and locked deposits fulfilled, Etherlink teams will re-enable FA token transfer functionality back to the Tezos Bridge UI.

How to vote

Participating in Etherlink’s governance is simple. Bakers can submit their vote with the Octez CLI, Better Call Dev or by interacting with the governance contracts using the Etherlink Governance Explorer — it only takes a few clicks!

As a baker, you can also cast your votes using a voting key. This video guide shows you how to set it up and cast your first vote.

Proposal Period

The proposal period spans for 3600 layer 1 blocks, or about 8 hours. Proposals must gather support from at least 5% of the total voting power to move to the Promotion period.

Voting with the Octez client CLI

To upvote Etherlink 6.1 once the the Proposal period starts, you can use the following Octez client command:

octez-client transfer 0 from <baking_address/voting_key> to KT1DxndcFitAbxLdJCN3C1pPivqbC3RJxD1R --entrypoint "upvote_proposal" --arg "0x0056aea7f98b2bc4d18edb450b2f098f6e95e5356f30a1fac2b50080f3e482bad1" --burn-cap 0.2

Voting with the Etherlink Governance Explorer UI

Alternatively, bakers can vote using Etherlink’s Governance Explorer:

  1. Go to governance.etherlink.com. Connect your wallet to the application, and look for the Fast kernel governance contract. Alternatively, you can follow this link:

  2. Connect your wallet, and click on the Slow tab.

  3. Select the currently active Slow governance period, where the Farfadet proposal has been injected.

  4. Click Upvote to upvote the proposal.

  5. Sign the request with your wallet (either with the baking key or a voting key).

Should the Etherlink 6.1 proposal gather enough support to advance to the next stage, you would need to cast your final vote once the promotion Period starts.

Promotion Period

The Promotion period also spans for 3600 layer 1 blocks, or 8 hours. To pass, the proposal must meet a quorum (15% of all voting power must vote Yea, Nay, or Pass) and super-majority (80% of Yea or Nay votes must be Yea) requirements.

Voting with the Octez client CLI

If the proposal is selected for the Promotion period, you’d then use the following command to vote “yea”:

octez-client transfer 0 from <baking_address/voting_key> to \
KT1DxndcFitAbxLdJCN3C1pPivqbC3RJxD1R --entrypoint "vote" --arg '"yea"'

Voting with the Etherlink Governance Explorer UI

To vote in the promotion period:

  1. Repeat steps 1 – 3 from the proposal period steps above.
  2. Click on Vote, then select “Yea”, “No” or “Pass” according to your preference.
  3. Submit your vote.
  4. Sign the request with your wallet/voting key.

Thanks for your support

While this proposal follows shortly after the activation of Farfadet, we believe it is important to address this regression promptly in order to restore full functionality of the Etherlink’s Tezos Bridge.

As a reminder, the Fast governance process has shorter periods and stricter participation requirements than the Slow contract we usually use for regular kernel upgrades. Active participation from bakers is therefore particularly important to ensure the adoption of the kernel upgrade proposal.

Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions: about how to participate in Etherlink’s governance or about the issues fixed by Etherlink 6.1.

Thank you for your continued engagement and support.
