New Taquito stable release - v25.1.0

Following last week’s v25.1.0-beta0 call for testers, I’ve promoted the release to Taquito v25.1.0.

In addition to everything from v25.1.0-beta0, the final release includes a fix in @taquito/rpc to clean up expired cache timers (#3454) and routine dependency updates (#3450).

Summary of what’s in v25.1.0:

  • tz5 / ML-DSA-44 support: addresses, keys, signatures, Michelson encoding, local forging and signature verification, including importing Octez mdsk and encrypted mdesk keys, with conformance tests against an isolated Octez node.
  • Operation confirmation fixes: finding operations that were already included before monitoring began, including when a wallet returns the operation hash after inclusion.
  • Reveal fee fixes: using the network’s advertised fee rates and avoiding double-counting reveal bytes in batch estimates.
  • Concurrent preparation fixes: preventing independent preparations from interfering with each other’s counter allocation.
  • Simulation recovery improvements: a bounded counter refresh for nonstandard RPC errors.
  • Michelson encoding, RPC, and metadata fixes: preserving single-element lists and sets inside options, cleaning up expired RpcClientCache timers, updating the default IPFS gateway (ipfs.filebase.io), and providing clearer metadata retrieval errors.

To install or upgrade:

npm install @taquito/taquito@25.1.0

Update the other @taquito/* packages your application uses to 25.1.0 as well. Full details and compatibility notes are in the v25.1.0 release notes.

Taquito remains available through the existing @taquito/* packages, repository, and documentation.

One side note on this release:

After our Tezos Foundation grant ended earlier this year, we were assured at length that their octez.js fork (trilitech/octez.js / @tezos-x/octez.js) was only a contingency, and that there would be no changes as long as we continued maintaining Taquito. Later over the summer, they cut us off from the Slack-Connect channels because we no longer had an active TF agreement, and dropped me from the proto-ecosystem calls. That part is particularly ironic, since another community member and I started those calls years ago as a grassroots effort to fix coordination problems across the ecosystem.

No one from TF, Trilitech, or Nomadic Labs has reached out to me about octez.js since. However, I noticed last week, right after posting v25.1.0-beta0, that trilitech/octez.js actually has what looks like a full-time effort behind it:

  • The Tezos X Previewnet bug reports filed on Taquito (#3437, #3438, #3439) that I spent my spare time fixing for this release were actually found while testing @tezos-x/octez.js, and cross-filed to trilitech/octez.js six minutes later (#61, #62, #63) with the @tezos-x/octez.js imports swapped to @taquito/* for our issue tracker.
  • They are running an automated Taquito Sync Tracker (#53) monitoring ecadlabs/taquito commits and a check:rebrand linter to scrub taquito and ecadlabs references.
  • Hours after I published v25.1.0-beta0, they systematically backported my fixes and tz5 post-quantum implementation into octez.js (PR #137, PR #144, PR #145).

To be clear, I’m not looking to win back TF funding, and I’ll be glad to wrap up my Taquito maintenance once octez.js is officially announced and supported.

Still, saying one thing while doing the opposite (cutting us off from Slack and the coordination calls we helped start, filing octez.js bugs on our repo with swapped imports so I fix them in my spare time, and running an automated find-and-replace pipeline to harvest the commits without a word of communication) is a sad demonstration of bad culture, and shows just how low-trust this environment has become.

As I read Jev’s words I ponder how long it will take to learn the lesson that we’re working out the kinks of the soul of Tezos rather than simply releasing “cool tech” and “cool on-chain governance.”

If we don’t resolve what’s ailing our soul, everything that Tezos puts out will be stillborn from the start. Imagine Sapling or LB over and over and over again. That can’t be pleasant for anyone, can it?

Make no mistake, I am not putting anyone down nor am I glossing over the amazing grassroots community of builders that we have.

There are no villains here. There are only people with disregulated nervous systems making decisions. These decisions are to distance and disconnect. Because everyone is seen as a self-serving number that will stab Tezos in the back, eventually.

We need to be very careful when severing our connections with people like Jev. Verily, we are cutting off our own limbs here. I’ve seen what Jev does over several years now. He has shown immense care toward fixing the root cause of our soul rot. He has tried to connect and communicate so that everyone works better. I have seen him put thought and care into his words and his actions over and over again, with no ego whatsoever. But, alas, the substrate is not one where this solution can work.

We are largely seen as a spectacular failure out there in the marketplace of ideas. And it’s not because the tech was bad or the on-chain governance was a bad idea.

The way I see it, we have an original idea that’s stood the test of time. We still have some amazing people with amazing open hearts who are not self-serving demons. Now is the time to read our own white paper again and stop thinking and acting small. It’s time to do the body work that will lift the plague of misunderstanding human nature and not being able to tell friend and foe apart.

The choice is simple. Evolve and realize our original vision or stay small and irrelevant.

There is providing for yourself and your family and there is feeding your soul. It’s time to do the latter, for without it the former will feel hollow and will lack any pleasure.

The biggest pleasure for some here will be seeing Tezos make a mark on the pages of history. We worked together and we made a difference.

It’s time to throw away what’s not serving us. It’s time to stop pointing fingers, because when we point a finger at someone else, we have 4 fingers pointing right back at us. Everyone is not a selfish self-serving piece of garbage. Rejoice in the actual 100x’ers we already have here and support them.
